Working with seniors is a 'dream job'

Mary Sanger has served as the director of the Jonesborough Senior Center for four years. She worked in long-term care for 11 years before taking the job.

“When the opportunity to have my dream job presented itself, I jumped at the chance,” Sanger said.

The Jonesborough facility was recently accredited by the National Institute of Seniors Centers.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT THE JONESBOROUGH SENIOR CENTER?

Senior Center director. Helping keep seniors active longer and enjoy their retirement is what we all work for at the Senior Center.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS PROFESSION?

My internship in college was at a senior center, and I felt the pull to have my career be serving seniors.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Seeing the difference that a place like the Jonesborough Senior Center is making in the lives of seniors in our community.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING OF GETTING INTO THIS LINE OF WORK?

You need to have a heart for others. This is a job that takes a true love for what you do and serving others.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE AT THE JONESBOROUGH SENIOR CENTER?

It is warm and welcoming and there is such a positive atmosphere.
