ELIZABETHTON — A Roan Mountain man was arraigned in Carter County Sessions Court this week after his wife told a deputy sheriff that he struck her in the top of her head with the claw end of a claw hammer last Saturday.

Raymond Keith McKinney, 45, 116 Tillman Campbell Road, Roan Mountain, was charged with aggravated assault. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. set McKinney’s next court date for Nov. 26.

McKinney’s wife told deputies that McKinney left their home before she woke up on Saturday, Nov. 9, and returned home around noon. She said he was intoxicated and started arguing about cigarettes.

She told deputies he grabbed a hammer in the kitchen and chased her outside. She said he got her on the ground and started hitting her with his hand and fist. She said that as the assault continued, McKinney took the hammer and hit the top of her head with the claw end.

She said she heard her father-in-law coming down the driveway, and that is when the attack ceased.
