A Johnson City man was charged with arson Sunday after setting fire to a rental house, police said.

Police and firefighters responded to the house fire at 2200 7th Ave. about 7:40 p.m. and found Richard Aldridge, 38, standing in the driveway. The house is adjacent to the Johnson City Country Club in east Johnson City.

Police said Aldridge, the renter, told them he set the fire by pouring gasoline on clothing in a bedroom and on the kitchen floor.

Aldridge was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $10,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Tuesday.
