The town of Erwin is preparing to say goodbye to the herd of brightly painted elephant statues that have been attracting attention locally and nationally since spring. Seventeen, two-foot tall concrete elephant statues on display throughout downtown Erwin will go up for bid in a silent auction to be conducted Oct. 28 - Nov.1 at Erwin Town Hall.
Teaser: A total of 20 elephant statues included in this year’s benefit Trunk Project will remain on display in downtown Erwin through October. The statues will be sold in silent auction to wrap up on Nov. 1, with all proceeds going to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald.
ERWIN - With Auctioneer Kimball Sterling presiding over the bidding, Saturday's Erwin Elephant Rival auction of eight baby elephant statues raised $16,700 for local charities and two nonprofit elephant protection groups.
The final numbers are in on last weekend’s elephant auction in downtown Erwin. And when the last gavel fell more than $11,000 had been added to the total raised for The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald.
