ELIZABETHTON — Elizabethton police say a shot fired soon after they arrived at a city motel Thursday afternoon was a suicide.

Officers were called to Traveler’s Inn at 505 W. Elk Ave. after a lodger refused to check out of his room. Police arrived at the motel at 2:34 p.m. and the shot was fired at 2:39 p.m.

The man had barricaded himself in the room, leading police to cordon off the motel, evacuate adjacent rooms and close neighboring Mill Street as a safety precaution.

After attempts to communicate with the man, officers entered the room and discovered he had shot himself.

The incident was initially described as a shootout, but police later indicated only one shot was fired.

This is a developing story. The Johnson City Press has a reporter at the scene. Keep visiting this space for updates.
