A teenager dragged a Johnson City police officer from a motorcycle after a road rage incident Tuesday, police said in a news release.

William Kaywood, 19, 1500 Bell Ridge Road, was charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest and vandalism under $1,000.

Police initially went to the area of West State of Franklin Road and West Watauga Avenue about a report of a hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. A Johnson City police officer located the motorcycle on Legion Street a short time later and followed it to the four-way stop at King Springs Road, where it was stopped in traffic. Police said the officer approached the motorcycle and attempted to remove Kaywood from it when he sped away, dragging the officer. The motorcycle crashed, and Kaywood was arrested.

Police later learned the initial situation was not a crash involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian but a road rage incident. Police said Kaywood was upset because a vehicle cut off his friends in traffic, who were also traveling on State of Franklin. Kaywood hit the mirror of the other vehicle with his arm, causing damage.

Kaywood was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $31,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Wednesday.
