ELIZABETHTON — A man reported to the Carter County Sheriff’s Department that he was assaulted and his car stolen when he stopped on Gap Creek Road on Sunday to offer a ride to two pedestrians.

Sgt. James Nienast said he was called to the scene at 722 Gap Creek Road by the man, who told him he recognized one of the men and stopped to offer them a ride. He told Nienast that one of the men was Cody Joshua Madden, 28, 1545 U.S. Highway 321, Hampton. He told Nienast that Madden and the other man pulled pistols on him, beat him up and the unidentified man tried to stab him with a knife.

Nienast also reported that Madden and the other man used a syringe on the caller. He said the syringe contained an unknown substance. He said the men then stole his vehicle and left him stranded in the area.

Madden was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and motor vehicle theft.

Madden appeared in Sessions Court on Monday morning. Judge Keith Bowers Jr. appointed a public defender for Madden, reduced his bond from $25,000 to $12,500, and set his next court appearance for Dec. 16.
