Johnson City police charged a 16-year-old student with faking social media threats against the city’s high and middle schools on Friday.

Police said they were notified at 7:30 a.m. about a threat made against students and employees of Science Hill High School and Liberty Bell Middle School via Snapchat.

An investigation soon led to the Science Hill student. Police said the student had received information from another person via Facebook Messenger of a possible act of violence against a non-specific school. Police said the student embellished and knowingly spread false information on Snapchat that the local schools were the targets.

The teenager charged with filing a false report and was set to appear Dec. 13 in Johnson City Juvenile Court.
