KINGSPORT — Police announced Tuesday a Johnson City woman injured Sunday in a wrong-way Interstate 26 crash died Monday night.

Police had reported Margaret C. Buck, 47, was traveling westbound in her 2008 Honda Accord near the Rock Springs Road exit about 5:15 a.m. Sunday when she collided head-on with a 2005 Mercedes C230 driven by Zachary D. Hunt, 23, Unicoi. The Mercedes was eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Police said Hunt suffered non-incapacitating injuries in the crash while Buck’s injuries were described as incapacitating. She died about 9 p.m. Monday.

The westbound lanes of I-26 were closed for more than three hours to allow for treatment and transportation of the injured and removal of the vehicles and debris, police said.

On Tuesday, police charges were pending, and the Kingsport Police Department Traffic Unit was continuing its investigation.

Police said they had determined Hunt had entered I-26 on an exit ramp — rather than entrance — at the intersection of John B. Dennis Highway and Wilcox Drive.

Anyone who saw the Mercedes accessing I-26 at this intersection, saw the Mercedes traveling in the wrong direction at any point along the two-mile stretch of I-26 between the Wilcox Drive and Rock Springs Road exits or witnessed the crash itself was asked to call crash investigators at 423-224-2750.
