A woman struggled with police Monday at the John Sevier Center after assaulting a store clerk while shoplifting at a discount store, police said in a news release.

Tanesha M. Taylor, 31, was with charged with aggravated assault, theft under $1000 dollars, vandalism and resisting arrest.

About 11:30 a.m., police were called to the Dollar General at 1121 N. Roan St., where employees reported the woman had left the business with 38 items valued at $173.

A store clerk tried to stop Taylor, but she refused to stay. Taylor placed all merchandise into her vehicle and backed her vehicle toward the store clerk. The vehicle struck a grocery cart, causing it to hit the store clerk.

Police found Taylor in the Sevier Center parking area, where she was placing the stolen items into trash bags.

After a brief struggle, she was taken into custody. Taylor was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $5,000 bond and arraigned Tuesday in Sessions Court.
