NE State parking garage vandalized, U-Haul rental reported stolen & more crime from Johnson City police

Parking garage damage. A Piney Flats man was charged with felony vandalism Tuesday after damaging the gate at the parking garage in downtown Johnson City earlier in the month, police said. On May 5, police were called to Northeast State Community College’s parking garage on Buffalo Street, where an employee reported that someone had pulled down the gate blocking the entrance/exit. Police obtained video showing a silver four-door Ford F150 back down the ramp. A tow strap was hooked to the lower portion of the gate and the pickup moved forward, pulling the gate down. Christopher Gabbard, 37, 348 Ridge Drive, Piney Flats, was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $10,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Wednesday.

Stolen U-Haul rental. An Elizabethton woman was arrested Tuesday after Johnson City’s U-Haul rental company reported that she had failed to return a pickup she had rented earlier in May. Melinda Montgomery, 27, 1001 S 2nd St., was charged with theft of a motor vehicles over $10,000. Employees at U-Haul, 2805 N. Roan St., told police they rented a 2019 Ford F150 to Montgomery on May 2 for a one-day rental. The told police Montgomery emailed them May 7 stating that she was going out of town. Employees tried to make contact with her on several occasions for her to re-new the contract or return the vehicle. The business said they never heard from her after the email. Bristol police Department stopped the vehicle Tuesday, and Montgomery was taken into custody. She was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $10,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Wednesday.

Marijuana arrest. A traffic stop led Johnson City police to file a drug charge against at 29-year-old man Tuesday. Police said they stopped Cory Lawson, 605 Carter Sells Road, for speeding and found him with about 30 grams of marijuana and two glass smoking pipes. He was charged with speeding, possession of marijuana for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held in the Washington County Detention Center under $10,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for Wednesday.
