ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton Police Department is investigating a Tuesday morning incident in which an 8-month-old child went into cardiac arrest and died.

Chief of Police Jason Shaw said police officers, along with the Carter County Rescue Squad, were called to Lynn Ridge Apartments on Bluefield Avenue at 7:18 a.m. Shaw said the initial dispatch informed the responders that the mother had awakened to find her child not breathing.

Carter County 911 dispatchers gave the mother CPR instructions over the phone while the ambulance and police were on the way. When the responders arrived, they determined the baby was “beyond help of any lifesaving emergency medical treatment.”

Police investigators, along with the Carter County coroner, investigators from the medical examiner’s office and investigators with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services also responded to the scene.

The child’s body was taken for an autopsy. Shaw said the investigation is continuing and there have been on arrests.
