Johnson City police Tuesday released the identity of a woman whose body was found in a low-income housing complex apartment over the weekend.

The body was identified as that of Mary E. Hammitt, 37, Elizabethton, police said in a news release.

About 6:30 p.m. Saturday, police went to Lakewood Village off Swadley Road, where residents reported an “unknown person” had been found deceased in their apartment. Investigators would not say how they thought the person died, but confirmed there was no trauma to the body.

Hammitt’s body was sent to East Tennessee State University’s William L. Jenkins Forensic Center, where an autopsy was to be completed to determine the cause and manner of death.

Police sought the public’s help Monday in the investigation and continued that effort in Tuesday’s news release.

The Johnson City Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division asked that anyone having information call (423) 434-6166 or to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 434-6158.
