An inmate who hanged himself with a bed sheet Friday in the Washington County Detention Center has died, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Ed Graybeal said in news release that Leonard R. Morrow, 33, of 661 Lann Road, Greeneville, was pronounced dead at Johnson City Medical Center.

On Friday, Morrow was found in his cell hanging by his bed sheet around 11:30 a.m. Detention officers and medical staff performed CPR until EMS arrived, at which time they took over his care and took him immediately to JCMC. Graybeal described the hanging as “self-inflicted.”

Morrow died at the hospital on Monday, according to Chief Deputy Leighta Laitenen.

Morrow had been held on a contempt charge from Juvenile Court and was in a cell alone. He had been in jail since June 2.

Graybeal said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation.
