THP: 1 killed in Carter County head-on collision

HAMPTON — A Roan Mountain teenager was killed and two others were injured during a head-on collision in Carter County on Sunday. 

The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed Monday the wreck occurred around 5 p.m. on Highway 19E, near the intersection of Simerly Creek Road. 

The THP report stated Cory Mowdy, 29, of Kingsport, was driving a 1991 Honda Accord north on Highway 19E when he crossed the double yellow line and struck a 2003 Saturn head-on.

A passenger in the Saturn, Brandi Thompson, 17, of Roan Mountain, was killed, the THP report states.

Another passenger in the Saturn, Hunter Poteat, 16, of Elk Park, N.C., was also injured. The driver, 19-year-old Tiffany Triplett, did not suffer any serious injuries. 

Thompson and Poteat were not wearing seat belts, the crash report stated. 

Mowdy and Triplett were both tested for drugs and alcohol. No citations were issued. Charges are pending.
