CHURCH HILL — A Hawkins County man wanted in Virginia for attempted murder was shot and killed Monday evening by Hawkins County deputies attempting to serve a fugitive warrant at a mobile home park near Church Hill.

No police were injured in the incident.

On Monday, the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office received information from the Clintwood Police Department that Eugene Lee Loftis, 25, 6339 Carters Valley Road, Church Hill, was wanted for attempted murder and should be considered armed and dangerous.

At about 5 p.m. Monday, deputies attempted to serve a fugitive warrant on Loftis at a mobile home park on Okolona Road in the Carters Valley community near Church Hill.

Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said that while some officers went to the residence, a couple stayed by the road.

"The suspect pulled in with a lady driving, and officers stopped the vehicle and talked to both of them," Lawson said. "He wouldn't comply with orders to show his hands. He pulled out a handgun and officers fired."

Loftis was pronounced dead at the scene.
