He moved to Johnson City at the age of 4, attending schools in the area and graduating from Science Hill. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Sellstrom out of Newport, Rhode Island. He began his career in radio working in Marion, VA., Bluefield, WV, WJSO and other area markets before his tenure with WCYB in Bristol. He worked for the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and later the VA Medical Center in Miami, FL where he retired in 1999.
Don attended Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Virgil Anderson SS Class and the “Gadabouts.”
He is survived by his wife Bea Sluder of Johnson City, and Georgia Taylor Sluder of Fredericksburg, VA, mother of his children, daughter Cyndi Johnson of Maryville, TN, son Mike Sluder of Johnson City, daughter Julie Burgess and husband Brian of Fredericksburg, VA, daughter Kelley Lowe and husband Jim of Griffin, GA, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Don loved to travel and was fortunate to visit 47 of the 50 state, many areas in the Caribbean, South America, and Canada. He loved the water and had a boat on Watauga Lake for many years.
The funeral service for Mr. Sluder will be conducted Friday, January 4, 2019 at 12:00 P.M. in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Reverend Michael Lester and Reverend Patti Muse, officiating. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to service from 10:30-12:00. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale for their care of Don, and to the staff on the 4th floor of the Johnson City Medical Center for their excellent care.
