ELIZABETHTON — A statewide competition for songwriters is getting started this weekend, and you can watch one of the qualifying rounds right here in Elizabethton at the Bonnie Kate Theater.

The Bonnie Kate is hosting one of 40 qualifying rounds being held across the state for the Tennessee Songwriters Week Competition. It is being put on by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. Twenty songwriters have signed up to perform one song each at the Bonnie Kate on Saturday, Feb. 1, starting at 6 p.m.

Four winning songwriters will be chosen by a panel of judges to move on to the showcase round at the Down Home in Johnson City on Feb. 29. The finalists from the six showcase events across the state get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share their original songs on the historic stage at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville in the final round of the competition on March 29.

The qualifying round at the Bonnie Kate Theater is free to attend for anyone wishing to enjoy an evening of live, original music. The Friends of the Bonnie Kate will be selling concessions to raise money for the theater’s restoration. The show starts at 6 p.m. To learn more about the competition, visit tnvacation.com/songwriters-week.
