Since forming in 2015, 1134 has been a fixture in the local heavy metal scene, well-known for their loud, high-energy live performances.

The band – made up of Kurt Johnson on guitar, Josh Brock on drums, Brian Lovejoy on guitar and vocals, and Jake Burrell on bass and vocals – recently finished recording their self-titled album in June, and they’re already working on new songs for their next EP.

But when it comes to 1134, it isn’t just about their heavy grooves. The group itself is an art concept.

In addition to new tracks yet to be released, the band is working on a comic book featuring each member. They’re also getting ready to film a music video following a benefit show for Ziggy’s Animal Rescue at Capone’s on Aug. 3 at 9 p.m. with Decade of Deceit, Aghori Skin Suit and Bacalou, Burrell’s other thrash group.

Burrell and Lovejoy recently spoke with the Press to tell us more about 1134.

Who are your biggest influences?

“Our influences range over a variety of genres of rock ‘n roll and heavy metal. Bands like KISS, Rush, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Dissection, Motley Crue and Death,” Lovejoy said.

Tell us about your recent album

“Our album that was released in June is simply called ‘1134.’ With our style and vision, we blended it with the music we wanted to create – bringing a familiar old-school heavy metal sound and adapting it with the new age of today,” Burrell said.

What was the recording process like?

“With this album, we had to record individually because of our schedules. Two at a time, mostly, but sometimes just one member would go to do their parts. We’re hoping next time we can go in as a whole band and really capture the magic we have together instead of trying to recreate it with days spread out,” Lovejoy said.

What kinds of changes has the band made since forming in 2015?

“1134 is constantly changing and seeking what’s new to us – sound, style, points of view with lyrics and even our writing process. We’ve had a couple of lineup changes in the past, and that does impact the sound, but it doesn’t stop us. We are hungry and striving to grow even more,” Lovejoy said.

So what’s next for 1134?

“We are working on a few things, actually. We have a comic book being created as we speak, and we start filming for a music video in August. We also already have a handful of songs being written for the upcoming future,” Lovejoy said.
