The East Tennessee State University Chorale won two competitions at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod at Denbighshire, Wales, in the United Kingdom last week.

The Chorale won the Adult Folk Song Choirs Competition and the Youth Choirs Competition on July 5.

Each summer since 1947, Llangollen has staged one of the world’s largest cultural festivals. Around 4,000 performers and as many as 50,000 visitors converge on the small Welsh town and its International Pavilion to sing and dance in a combination of “competition, performance, and international peace and friendship.”

In Welsh culture, an eisteddfod is a festival of literature, music and performance.

The 27-member ETSU Chorale performs in a variety of styles and genres, ranging from music of the Renaissance to newly composed works. Its members are chosen through a selective audition process and must be dedicated to the highest levels of artistry.
