The Johnson City/Washington County Veterans Memorial is just a little closer to having the funds to finish paying for the third phase of the project, but there’s still a huge deficit still to cover.

On Thursday, the Washington County Federated Republican Women dedicated the most recent fence plaque honoring veterans. It represents $750 toward the debt still owed on the third row of granite slabs where veterans names will be inscribed.

Brenda Barnette, Johnson City/Washington County Veterans Memorial chairwoman, said there are approximately seven fence panels available for plaques.

“The third row of granite is our phase three, and it will allow for 1,248 more names,” she said. The foundation still owes about $30,000, and fundraising efforts will continue to cover that cost as well as ongoing maintenance.

Sharon Boreing, president of the Washington County Federated Republican Women, said the organization chose the memorial because of its significance to the community.

“Our club was working on our Caring for America project and we chose the Veterans Memorial Foundation to contribute our funds to this year,” Boreing said. “We are honored and privileged to be able to do this as a political organization because we truly believe in what you’re doing here and we love, love our veterans,” she told Barnette.

Barnette said the plaques allow any person or organization to post “any message they wish to post. If you walk around the perimeter of the memorial fence, you’ll see every kind of message. I praise the Washington County Federated Republican Women because as a group they’re standing true to our veterans, (who) can never have enough praise and recognition.”

Any group or person who would like to reserve a fence panel plaque can visit the Veterans Memorial website at www.jc-wcveteransmemorial.org or mail donations to the Johnson City/Washington County Veterans Memorial, P.O. Box 3594, Johnson City, TN 37602.
