ELIZABETHTON — A sailor from Carter County who was killed when the Japanese navy attacked Pearl Harbor will be buried with full military honors in his hometown on Oct. 12, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Navy Seaman 2nd Class William V. Campbell was 20 at the time of his death on Dec. 7, 1941. Campbell was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft.

The Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack killed 429 crewmen, including Campbell.

Modern advances in anthropological analyses enabled scientists to identify Campbell in May.
