Participants can sign up at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show. Stories, poetry and written work are welcome. Each participate signs up for a 10-minute slot on stage in front of a supportive and enthusiastic audience. There is no theme, no competition and no censors, just free-form spoken word.

James is a graduate of the storytelling program at ETSU and is a best-selling novelist based in Johnson City. He has written more than 20 books and operates a storytelling blog.

Marr is a dynamic storyteller and speaker, originally from Las Vegas, now based in Johnson City. He was a finalist in the 2017 National Story Slam in Jonesborough. Both Tony and James will be sharing some of their work as well as serving as hosts.

David Joe Miller kicked off Spoken Word Open Mic in Asheville, North Carolina, in early 2015. In 2017 he added a monthly show in Jonesborough.

Spoken Word Open Mic is where anyone, no matter their experience or talent, can sign up to tell a story, recite a poem or read their written work to a supportive and enthusiastic audience. The event is always free and is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Miller, of Asheville.
