In the spotlight: Hit the great outdoors, even in winter

Johnson city

• Those who have Monday morning free can wrap their morning in community service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek, 1220 King Springs Road, for community projects at the park. The day will be filled with mulching trails and pulling invasive plants from the park. Dress to get dirty and stop by the park Monday morning to participate. 

• Runners looking for long runs can check out the 5 & Dime group run hosted by Fleet Feet. Runners can choose to run five or 10 miles. The runs meet at Fleet Feet, 302 Buffalo St., Saturdays at 7 a.m. 

Kingsport

• You don’t have to wait for spring to begin your adventures in gardening, and gardening author Margie Hunter is here to show you how with a special seminar at Warrior’s Path State Park, 490 Hemlock Road, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Reservations are required and can be made at reserve.tnstateparks.com. The seminar is $5 per person to attend.

•  If you’re not quite ready to enjoy the great outdoors, keep dreaming of warmer weather while visiting the second annual RV and Recreation show at the Meadowview Conference Center, 1901 Meadowview Parkway. Tickets to the show are $8, and the hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. 

Bristol

• Learn how animals survive the winter at Steele Creek park on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. in the park’s nature center, 80 Lakeshore Drive. After the seminar, take a short walk to visit some of the animals in their winter habitats. 

Jonesborough

• Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a peace walk and community art project hosted by the McKinney Center and the Jonesborough Arts Initiative, from 1-3 p.m. The peace walk with gather at the Depot Street park at 1 p.m., and a walk guided by local storytellers will file through the town. The walk will end back at the park to decorate the fence in a community art project.
