Students with disabilities are disproportionately affected by corporal punishment. The educational and child development research overwhelmingly is against corporal punishment because of the negative effects on children. The number of states allowing corporal punishment is continuously being reduced.
Knowing all of this, why would they choose to allowing it?
I know some people are going to say, “I was whipped, spanked, paddled, etc in school and I turned out fine.” I’m guessing you have some issues from it you maybe aren’t aware of.
What is so bad in Elizabethton schools that they need to hit children? Do they have a problem with bullies? A bully is a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker. Isn’t that exactly what a faculty member is doing that strikes a child?
What discipline problem do they have that is so bad they have to resort to hitting children? Maybe instead of hitting children, they need a new school board. One that has the best interest of the child as their main concern. One that can understand academic research and take it into consideration when voting.
What the county needs
I believe what Washington County needs is a county mayor for all the people. A mayor in the mold of retired Mayor George Jaynes, who had an open door policy and was visible throughout the county and who genuinely cared about the community.
We cannot afford more of what we have had these past few years from the likes of Joe Grandy, who was the architect of the property tax increase as budget chairman. And who supported and voted for a methadone clinic in Gray. He also voted in favor of same-sex marriage as a commissioner.
Is this the character of what we want in a mayor? Not me. We need someone with common sense and compassion for all as our mayor.
Let’s return Washington County to the people and the only way we can do that is to vote for Mark Ferguson, a real small businessman who knows what it is like to pay the bills and make a payroll with his own money.
Build the wall
With all the news about DACA in the forefront, I want to express what I think should be done. Only the small amount of productive illegals should be able to remain in this country and be given a time limit to do the work that one has to do to become an American citizen. If they can’t do what others have done for decades, then send them back to the country of their origin.
They should not be given immediate rights until they complete the requirements needed to become a citizen.
Those who are not productive and have criminal records should be immediately escorted back to their own countries. Build the dang wall so this does not happen again. What’s that saying, “Fences make good neighbors.”
Nothing in life is free. People in DACA should work at becoming an American citizen just like our ancestors did. They may learn to appreciate America if they are taught the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and all the history of how we became the greatest country in the world.
