Letters: Jonesborough deserves a new school

A decision is likely to be made by the end of the year regarding plans for a new Jonesborough School. Most people I talk with think that utilizing the current elementary school site is fine and that the more modern additions built in the 1980s and 1990s could and should be saved and renovated.

That being said, the round portion of the building needs to be demolished in order to provide a better overall learning environment. No amount of remodeling can truly cure the defects found in this nearly 50-year-old, poorly designed structure. I believe this to be a very reasonable position, especially when comparing the costs versus benefits of the other building options that have been presented.

Our county Board of Education and County Commission are to be commended for taking on the very important and often very difficult task of upgrading school facilities. As this discussion comes to a conclusion, it is my sincere hope that the needs and preferences of the Jonesborough community will be considered.

The Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen passed a resolution back in 2015 asking the county school system to include our community in its next round of school building plans with the idea that the round buildings at both Boones Creek and Jonesborough were seriously flawed and had outlived their usefulness. It is my sincere hope that our elected leaders will find a path forward that demonstrates good stewardship of taxpayer funds and a thorough understanding of just how important adequate school facilities are to the Jonesborough community.

Our kids need a new school.
