Jan. 9, 1902: The Comet opined that Washington County made a mistake in giving to a turnpike company the right to the public road from Johnson City to Jonesboro for the purpose of making a toll road of it. “The people along that road have rights that should be respected.”

Jan. 9, 1935: Johnson City aviators Ed Horton and Lawrence Nave were en route to take part in the National Air Races in Miami, Florida.

Jan. 9, 1965: The NAACP sued on behalf of 115 black children, parents and guardians to fully integrate the Johnson City School System.

Jan. 9, 2006: Lake Ridge Elementary School students shipped out a truckload of clothing, gift cards and other items to a sister school in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where families had been affected by Hurricane Katrina.
