Jan. 4, 1900: In the first issue of the new century, The Comet informed readers that a case of smallpox had been reported in Johnson City.

Jan. 4, 1935: Langston High School’s boys basketball team defeated Greeneville 39-12 for the Tigers’ second win of the year.

Jan. 4, 1956: Eugene P. Caruthers, music and science teacher at Langston High School, became the first black student to enroll at East Tennessee State College. Caruthers enrolled as a graduate student to pursue a master of education degree.

Jan. 4, 2010: A roost of turkey vultures, estimated at 100 or more birds, had residents in Johnson City’s Oak Park neighborhood concerned.
