Today in Johnson City History: December 17

Dec. 17, 1958: The Johnson City Press-Chronicle reported that a contract for $279,450 for school repairs and additions to existing schools was awarded to the Burleson Company. Among other expenditures in the contract, Columbus Powell was allocated $10,950, Douglass $84,860, North Side $44,687 and South Side $45,978.

Dec. 17, 2005: Six soldiers of the 844th Combat Engineer Battalion’s Alpha Company, based in Gray, returned to Tri-Cities Regional Airport to the cheers and tears of family and friends. Alpha Company was stationed in Kuwait, where the troops helped in establishing a permanent military facility. The crowd of about 30 echoed sudden gasps and cried tears of joy as the soldiers’ families saw the plane slowly coming into view through the terminal’s windows.
