ELIZABETHTON — The city parks may be at their lowest during the coming winter months, but that does not mean Elizabethton’s Parks and Recreation Department will be slowing down its pace of making improvements and introducing new attractions.

Director Mike Mains recently sent a letter highlighting the various initiatives the department is taking.

One of the top items he mentioned was “Christmas at the Covered Bridge.” Mains said new Christmas lights will light up the Covered Bridge Park. He invited everyone to come and enjoy the lighted park grounds throughout the month of December.

Mains said there are several other proposed improvements for the Covered Bridge Park and the adjoining Edwards Island Park this year. Phase I of a planned improvement of the parks is the building of a new bathroom facility and picnic pavilion. There are also plans for a new parking lot on the south side of the Covered Bridge.

Additional improvements include the landscaping of several locations within the park, renovations to both entrances of the Covered Bridge, new park lighting, and the creation of a food truck service area for special events.

“We are really excited about the future of these two park facilities and the impact these improvements could have on Elizabethton. The combination of proposed park renovations, increase special events and programing, and the possibility of creating several whitewater features along the Doe (River) could produce great rewards for Elizabethton,” Mains said.

Work will continue as cost estimates are obtained for the improvements, along with identifying the financial resources to fund the projects. These financial resources may include grant funding and naming rights opportunities.
