ELIZABETHTON — The soccer teams for Elizabethton High School will soon have a new field for practices and workouts.

The Elizabethton City School Board met Thursday to approve several items, including the low bid from Baker Construction for $94,989.84.

The field is on the grounds of the former Carter County Memorial Hospital on West G Street. The hospital closed when Sycamore Shoals Hospital opened. The buildings was torn down after standing vacant for several years. The property is owned by the city of Elizabethton.

With most of the lot on which the high school stands now covered in buildings or spaces designated for certain groups, the new field will likely be used frequently by various groups. The Boys and Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County and the Elizabethton Soccer Association worked with the school system on getting the field designated for recreation.

“It will be nice to have some green space,” said Rita Booher, school board chairwoman.

The board also approved the purchase of new tables and chairs for the commons area of the high school. Prior to approving the purchase, the board agreed to the provisions of a cooperative agreement with the Interlocal Purchasing System to reduce the bottom line of the furniture sale from around $100,000 to $54,035.28.

Board member Susan Peters praised the significant savings. Speaking to Director of Schools Corey Gardenhour, Peters said “I want to commend you, Dr. Gardenhour, and Beth Wilson (the school system’s business director) are always searching for ways to save money.”

With membership in the Interlocal Purchasing System, the cost of 26 tables, eight logo laminates, three waste receptacles, three recycling receptacles and two condiment cabinets from Palmer Hamilton LLC will be $39,702. The board approved that contract. The board also approved a contract for 312 chairs from ScholarCraft for $14,333.28.

Gardenhour told the board the tables will be custom made and manufacturing of the new tables will begin immediately after the board approves the contract.

After the meeting, Gardenhour said the tables will be customized for Elizabethton High School, featuring the school colors of orange and black and with such school images as “Tuffy” the Cyclone.

Gardenhour said the floor will also have a new surface to go with the new furniture and new lighting.

Gardenhour told the board that the new furniture will be replacing the original furniture that came with the school, that is now 40 years old. “That school board did a great job (selecting durable furniture), it has really lasted,” Gardenhour said. But he said some of the furniture has been patched and it is time for new furniture for the commons area.
