JCCC gearing up for 13th annual Tillinghast Invitational

The local golf tournament scene begins next week with the Tillinghast Invitational, and Johnson City Country Club head professional Mike Crowe couldn’t be more excited to be playing host for the first event of the season.

“The golf course is really shaping up,” Crowe said Friday. “All the rain we got has been good and now we’re starting to dry out. We’re looking forward to it. It should be awesome.”

The 13th annual event is set for June 2-3 at Johnson City Country Club. The tournament was begun to honor the course’s designer, the legendary A.W. Tillinghast.

“It’s hard to believe this is the 13th one,” Crowe said.

The tournament is the first stop of the Tri-Cities Amateur Tour, a group of five tournaments from which the area’s player of the year will be awarded. It’s also a points event for the Tennessee Golf Association’s player and senior golfer of the year award.

As of Wednesday, 97 players had registered for the 36-hole, stroke-play tournament. Included in that number is defending champion Trevor Hulbert. The East Tennessee State golfer beat Lawrence Largent in a sudden-death playoff for last year’s title.

“The entries are still coming in,” Crowe said. “We have another strong field. We have a lot of good seniors coming too.

“We’ve added some new players who haven’t been here before. We’re getting 10 or 12 people from over in North Carolina. We appreciate them coming.”

Even though the official entry deadline is Sunday, Crowe said he’ll probably take entries until as late as Wednesday.

“I’m still trying to get some of our members recruited,” he said.

The entry fee is $145. To enter, call the pro shop at (423) 928-5161.
