Greeneville routs Haywood for second straight title

COOKEVILLE — Greeneville rolled to its second straight TSSAA Class 4A state football championship with a 56-21 blowout of Haywood on Thursday evening at Tennessee Tech University.

Cade Ballard, who was named the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football for Class 4A for a second straight year on Sunday, had 19 rushes for 162 yards and four touchdowns. He also completed 7 of 10 passes for 95 yards.

The Greene Devils, who won the school’s fourth state championship overall, piled up 503 yards of offense, with 408 of them coming on the ground.

Jaevon Gillespie had 15 carries for 173 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and Ty Youngblood finished with 16 carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

Haywood opened the game with a 96-yard touchdown return by Taylor Shields. Decourtney Reed scored on a 12-yard run at the end of the quarter to give the Tomcats a 21-14 lead at the end of one quarter.

Greeneville scored 21 points in the third quarter for a 35-21 halftime lead and scored 42 unanswered points overall. Ballard ended the season with 160-of-198 passing for 3,050 yards. He had more touchdown passes (40) than incompletions (38) and just one interception.
