ROAN MOUNTAIN—Cloudland made sure Midway didn’t enjoy its visit to Roan Mountain on Friday night.

The Highlanders scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to take a 36-22 victory over the Green Wave in Class A playoff action on a soggy Orr Field.

Cloudland advances to the second round, where it will host Coalfield — which advanced with a 56-14 win over Jellico.

Cloudland senior Jordan Coffey continued his dominant season. The running back had 273 yards on 39 carries and scored all five CHS touchdowns.

“The offensive line did a great job,” Cloudland head coach Mike Lunsford said. “The kids kept fighting and Coffey got a lot of yards after contact. He punished them and as the game went on he got better.”

Coffey struck first in the first quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run, but Midway answered quickly to even things up. CHS added a Coffey TD in the final minute of the first quarter, and took a 14-6 lead into the half.

After Coffey scored the hat trick touchdown with 6:56 to play, the Green Wave found the momentum.

Midway scored on a 54-yard touchdown pass, and then recovered an onside kick. The ‘Landers, however, stopped the Green Wave drive, but was unable to capitalize. In the final minute of the third quarter, Midway’s Jason Taylor hit Hunter Mims for an 82-yard touchdown pass that tied the game up at 22-22 going to the fourth quarter.

The ‘Landers, however, took care of business in the fourth quarter. Coffey broke the stalemate with a punching run to give CHS a 30-22 lead midway through the quarter.

After Cloudland forced Midway off the field on fourth down at midfield, the ‘Landers used over four minutes off the clock. That drive was capped off with a 6-yard touchdown by Coffey to advance Cloudland.

Josh Blair added 67 yards for the Cloudland offense.

Midway’s Taylor had 241 yards passing on 12-of-26 passing, while Andrew Burton added 117 yards on the ground.
