UPDATE: Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson Mark Nagi said traffic has returned to normal on Interstate 26 after multiple crashes closed the eastbound side and slowed traffic on the westbound side between the Eastern Star Road and Gray exits.

Previously reported:

Multiple vehicle crashes slowed traffic on Interstate 26 Wednesday morning near the Eastern Star Road exit and the Interstate 81 interchange.

According to the Johnson City Police Department, a six-car collision heading toward Johnson City between the Eastern Star and Gray exits totally blocked the eastbound side of the interstate and slowed traffic on the westbound side. Injuries were reported in that crash.

After the initial crash, the department reported several other crashes in the area between mile markers 11 and 13.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area if possible.
