Jackie Cable, assistant fire chief with the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department, said a neighbor who just arrived home noticed smoke coming from the end of the garage of Mike Street’s Auto Repair, 103 Forest Drive.
The building was unoccupied at the time and the neighbor went over to the business owner’s house to raise the alarm. He said the owner had just gone to his house because he had developed a headache and needed an aspirin.
The men rushed to the burning garage and began driving out some of the cars that were inside, but the fire quickly grew.
Cable said that in addition to the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department, there were also firefighters from the Hampton/Valley Forge, Central, West Carter County and Watauga volunteer fire departments.
In addition to fighting the fire in the garage, firefighters also worked to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby house.
Cable said there were no injuries reported in the fire.
“We are not sure what caused the fire,” Cable said as firefighters continued to work hot spots. He said the Carter County Sheriff’s Department will investigate the fire site once it has cooled down.
