ELIZABETHTON — The first meeting of the new year for the Carter County Commission began on a sad note Tuesday night when the commissioners learned a 10-year-old boy had died after the ice broke on a frozen pond where he had been standing.

Those commissioners who did not already know about the tragedy learned about when Commissioner Willie Campbell gave the opening prayer and prayed for the boy and his family. Campbell’s normally strong voice broke as he spoke of the child in his prayer.

Sheriff Dexter Lunceford did not have the name of the boy. Lunceford said the emergency dispatch came through early Tuesday afternoon. He said the frozen pond was in the 400 block of Bluegrass Road in Roan Mountain.

Lunceford said Deputy McKinley Berry arrived on the scene, dived into the pond and pulled the boy from the water. The sheriff said CPR was started immediately and the boy was alive. He was evacuated to Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City.

More information will be available later Wednesday.
