Five Questions for 2019 Science Hill Homecoming Queen

Ya’bre Yirayiel Garcia, 17, was named Science Hill High School’s 2019 Homecoming Queen during last Friday’s game at Kermit Tipton Stadium.

On Thursday, the Press asked the senior and Friendship Baptist Church congregation member to tell us more about her interests, thoughts on the recent honor and her future goals, which include becoming a pediatrician.

Pet peeves: “I really don’t have one.”

Ideal vacation: Puerto Rico

Favorite food: Pizza

Favorite musician(s): “I really don’t have one. I just like listening to hip-hop, R&B and rap.”

What made you want to compete for homecoming queen?

“I just really wanted to be in it because it seemed like a fun thing to do!”

What was it like to be selected, and what did it mean to you?

“I was just surprised and thankful that all my peers voted for me. It means I’m a kind person, and people like me.”

What do you hope to be doing after high school?

“I really want to work in a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) and get my degree in neonatal care for babies. I’m going to Northeast (State Community College) for my first two years.”

What’s your favorite subject and why?

“I like history because I like to learn more about what happened in the past and things like that.”

Who is your favorite historical figure and why do they inspire you? 

“Martin Luther King Jr. He’s just a person who told it like it was and helped us out a lot (through his civil rights work) back then.”
