Elizabethton High School’s recently announced personnel decisions will have a major effect on the school’s athletic programs.

According to source close to the situation, the school has removed Mike Wilson and Eddie Pless as the Cyclones’ co-athletic directors. The decision was made Monday.

The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury has been conducting an investigation into the alleged misuse of school funds.

Director of Schools Corey Gardenhour said, “We have made employment decisions based on what we know thus far, and we will continue to cooperate fully with investigators throughout the duration of the investigation.”

Both men are well-respected in the community and longtime school employees. They each took retirement within the past calendar year, but agreed to take over as co-athletic directors for the 2017-18 school year. They were working under 120-day (Pless) and 100-day (Wilson) contracts.

Wilson served the Elizabethton school system in various roles for 37 years, including three stints as the girls basketball coach. He also was head boys basketball coach. Pless is a former head football coach and a longtime football assistant coach.
