A spike in reported illnesses among its students has prompted University School to close today and Friday.

In the past few days, about 60 University School students — roughly 10 percent of the student body at the K-12 school — were out due to various illnesses.

On Wednesday, that number went up to 80, with nearly 14 percent of the student body out sick. University School usually sees an absentee rate of 3 percent to 4 percent each day.

The illnesses reported, according to school officials, have ranged from head colds and respiratory issues to stomach viruses, strep throat and this year’s vicious flu.

“These illnesses are being shared over and over again by our students and their families. In an effort to break the cycle and stop the continuous spread of these illnesses, we have decided to close on Thursday and Friday,” Director Troy Knechtel said. “It is our hope that the two-day closure and subsequent weekend will provide our school community with a much-needed reset in terms of health.”
