Just three outs from a late-season win, Johnson City failed to finish off Greeneville Saturday night at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

Pushing across three runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Reds prevailed 4-2 in Appalachian League baseball play.

With Greeneville down 2-1, Miguel Hernandez met new pitcher Parker Kelly (4-3) with a single to begin the ninth. He advanced to second on a Raul Juarez sacrifice bunt, then Brandt Stallings lined a game-tying RBI single to center field.

After Jose Tello’s groundout moved Stallings to third, Mike Siani drove him home with a triple to right. Jonathan Willems followed up with a run-scoring base hit.

Conner Bennett retired Johnson City in order during the bottom of the ninth to pocket his sixth save of the season. Justin McGregor (1-1) preceded Bennett with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Both starters turned in impressive non-decisions. With Alexis Diaz limiting the Cardinals to two hits over six shutout frames, JC’s Tommy Parsons gave up only a run in seven innings from the slab.

Parsons totaled six strikeouts and Diaz five.

Willems and Justin Bellinger each batted 3 for 5 for Greeneville, which got a 2-for-4 showing from Hernandez. Willems finished with two RBIs, having homered in the fourth.

Outhit 11-5, Johnson City was topped by Liam Sabino at 2 for 3. He tripled to lead off the seventh, in which the Redbirds collected their two runs – both on wild pitches.

Sporting 28-36 records, the two teams meet today in Greeneville. Action is set to begin at 5 p.m.
