Sensitive Santa event set for Sunday at the mall

Staff Report • Nov 30, 2018 at 11:13 PM

The Mall at Johnson City is inviting children with sensory issues to enjoy the time-honored tradition of a visit and photos with Santa.

Sensitive Santa, a sensory-friendly holiday experience for children with all spectrums of special needs, will be held from 8-11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, prior to the mall opening.

Mall General Manager Tembra Aldridge said, “Our Sensitive Santa event minimizes traffic and wait times, while subduing music and lights, assuring a sensory-friendly, calming experience for Tri-Cities area children.”

“Visiting Santa Claus is one of the most joyous holiday experiences of the season for young children and their families. It’s important to the Mall at Johnson City that children of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to meet Santa,” she said.

Held in partnership with Autism Speaks, the event provides a more controlled and welcoming environment for a Santa photo experience for children with special needs. Simple adjustments are made to reduce stimuli, including muted lights, softer music and shorter wait times for visits with Santa and related activities.

The event is free and Santa photo packages will be available for purchase. Families and groups are asked to RSVP in advance of their visit. To serve a time or to learn more about Sensitive Santa visit the events page at www.themallatjohnsoncity.com.
