Jose "Louie" Cordero is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove a rapidly growing mass near his spine June 14 at the Cancer Center at Indiana University.
The center has requested payment of $12,500 in advance of the surgery and Grace’s congregation is doing all it can and asking for all the prayers it can get to make that possible for Louie and his his daughter, Avionna, who will turn 10 on Friday.
In an open letter to the community, District Pastor Mark Redd explained Louie’s life-and-death situation and asked for the help of “all family, friends, businesses and concerned citizens.”
Thirty-one years old with a fiancé and one daughter, Louie is from Brooklyn, N.Y., and has been attending Grace for the past three years.
According to Redd, “He moved to Johnson City 12 years ago to start a new and better life, leaving behind a life of drugs, alcohol and crime. He has since given his life to Christ and is now a born-again Christian.”
A few months ago, Louie was diagnosed with Embryonal Carcinoma, a rare form of stage III testicular cancer that has manifested near his spine. Doctors were unable to remove all the cancer in a recent surgery and there is no specialist in Tennessee who can perform the additional surgery Louie needs.
Due to his condition, he has lost his full-time employment and his insurance, but his job is on hold as he continues his fight for life at the Indiana University Cancer Center which is requesting $12,500 upfront as a down payment on the total cost of next week’s surgery.
Redd writes, “We believe, with God’s blessing, your financial gift and prayers that the goal of $12,500.00 will be reached.
“The target date is June 10th to meet this urgent need for our brother to have this much-needed surgery. We need your help to reach our goal.”
With help from Sweet Frog and Freddy’s, the church has conducted two fundraisers within the past week and has also been gathering donations on a “Go Fund Me” page titled “Help For Louie.” As of Wednesday night, more than $4,600 of the total needed had been collected.
Grace will continue the fundraising with a benefit concert Friday night at the church at 208 Garden Drive. Featured performers will include T.R. and Carla Dunn, Robbie Hale, Teleah Rogers and Levi Turner and the mime teams Prophetic Anointing and Deja Braxton.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m.. Admission is free and donations for the Help for Louie fund will be collected.
