United Way tags five new programs for annual funding

The United Way of Washington County has selected five new nonprofit service programs to share its annual funding.

The United Way board of directors voted this week to include Appalachia Service Project’s Tri-Cities Year-Round Home Repair program, Appalachian Mountain Project Access’ Specialty Care Coordination program, The Crumley House Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center’s Day Treatment program, Frontier Health’s Johnson City SAFE House and the Jonesborough Seniors Center’s new MyRide Tennessee program in its annual allocations process.

The vote marked the first expansion of the local United Way’s longstanding roster of annually funded agencies in 13 years.

“We are delighted to welcome these new agencies and programs to United Way,” United Way President and CEO Kristan Ginnings said. “Each program has a unique way of changing lives and making a difference in our community. Having them as partners will allow our United Way to support our area in a more comprehensive way than ever every before.”

Ginnigs said the expansion increased the number of United Way partner agencies to 21 and, under a new allocations process being implemented with the expansion, the potential number of agency programs receiving United Way funding to more than 35.

The allocations team will begin reviewing the partner agencies’ applications for program funding in December and newly expanded allocations will be awarded in 2019.

While the United Way has raised close to $1.7 million for the past several years, Ginnings said its hope is that new volunteer initiatives, new grant applications, increased community engagement in United Way activities and increased fundraising will allow for an increase in funding for its 17 initial partner agencies as well as funding for the new partner agency programs.

The expansion is part of a new impact-focused allocations model that Ginnings said is increasingly being used by local United Way organizations across the country.

United Way Campaign Chairman Gary McAllister said, “It is more important than ever to show your support for United Way of Washington County.”

“We are proud to lead the fight for the health, education and financial stability of people in our community and adding these programs will certainly allow us to broaden our impact on the physical, mental and social health of our neighbors and ourselves,” he said.
