In a press release issued late Monday, United Way leaders announced the campaign had raised $1,738,492.14.
Board Chairwoman Kim Holley expressed appreciation for Michael Estes, leader of the “The Time is Now” campaign, for the campaign volunteers and for the many area companies, organizations, employees and citizens who came together in the campaign to improve the lives of the community’s most vulnerable children, adults and seniors.
“Through these dollars we build the strength of our neighborhoods, bolster the health of our communities and change the lives of those who walk by us every day. When we reach out a hand to one we influence the condition of all,” Holley said.
Estes said he was pleased with the campaign total, credited the the campaign team for their hard work and thanked the campaign contributors for their generosity.
“I am tremendously grateful to the generous citizens in our community who chose donating to United Way to support those in need in our area. We look forward to building upon this success as (we) begin our 2018 campaign.”
United Way President and CEO Jerome A Julian also thanked the campaign’s contributors and looked forward to putting their donations to work for the agencies.
“We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks all of our donors. We look forward to our upcoming allocations process and learning about the positive differences this campaign has made for our community.”
The United Way kicked off the campaign in August with a goal of raising $1.8 million and more than $309,000 already pledged by area business and organizations that conduct their in-house United Way drive early to start the campaign off at a solid pace.
At the final campaign report meeting in December, $1,553,759 in contributions had been pledged and Estes announced the fundraising would continue for a few more weeks.
Julian noted the 2017 campaign goal was higher than it had been in recent years and came during a season when many people were giving to relief efforts that followed a series of natural disasters.
Estes stressed the importance of the final push for donations saying, “It is vital to us that we communicate to the public how important every donated dollar is to someone in need.
In the end the campaign finished less than $62,000 short of its $1.8 million goal and about $725 ahead of the total raised last year.
Agencies supported by the United Way campaign are:
• Adult Day Services, a day program for seniors and disabled adults in need of safe and supervised environment to spend their days;
• ARC of Washington County, a regional provider of services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities;
• American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee;
• Boys and Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County;
• Coalition for Kids, an after-school and summer enrichment program for Johnson City children with needs identified by their schools;
• Contact 211, a telephone hotline for anyone in crisis or in need of resource referrals;
• Family Promise, a network of about 75 area churches providing shelter, housing and a full range of support service for homeless families with children;
• The Frontier Health Adventure Program for teens;
• Girl Scouts of the Appalachian Council;
• Girls Inc., an after school and summer program for girls;
• Johnson City Schools Shoe Fund;
• Keystone Dental Care, a nonprofit clinic with income-based sliding scale fees for people without insurance;
• Personal Support Services, a program of the Northeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency, provided in-home assistance and services for seniors and others at risk of nursing home placement;
• Salvation Army of Johnson City;
• Sequoyah Council of Boy Scouts;
• Volunteer Center, a service of the local United Way office that matches volunteers with agencies that need their help; and
• Washington County Schools Shoes and Clothing Fund.
