ELIZABETHTON — Downtown Elizabethton’s sweetest eatery is now under new ownership,

David and Heather Odom took over Sweetsie Treats, 438 E. Elk Ave., on the first full day winter, Dec. 22. While winter is not considered the most auspicious time of year for selling frozen yogurt, David said “things are going great.”

To let everyone know about the new ownership, David and Heather held an open house and customer appreciation event last Saturday. The store was packed with both children and adults enjoying their cold treats and socializing. The event went from 4-7 p.m.

Everyone enjoyed the sweets, whether it was a milkshake, banana split, hot fudge cake or a frozen yogurt with an ever-expanding list of toppings. There was also plenty of great music to go with the treats and the socializing. Local bluegrass and gospel band Forgiven started playing at 5 p.m.

The open house will certainly help draw in customers, but David and Heather have been making additions to the eatery to help sales during the winter months. Heather said they have added some new sandwiches to go with the delicious soups. There are also new bakery goods and edible chocolate chip cookie dough.

David said he is excited to be a part of downtown Elizabethton and hopes to work with other merchants and store owners to encourage downtown growth. He is especially excited that some other new eateries are coming to downtown in the next couple of months and hopes to work with them on some promotions.

“We want to see downtown Elizabethton grow,” David said. He takes his inspiration from the growth that downtown Johnson City has experienced over the past five years. He hopes merchants can work together on promotions that link stores together on sales. He also hopes the Bonnie Kate Theater can encourage more people to come downtown.

There has been much talk in the past several years on revitalizing downtown. Now, young entrepreneurs like David and Heather are putting their money where the talk has been.
