Five questions with the first in line

What does it take to get a jump start on the best holiday deals?

A couple of early visits to your store of choice, a quick Thanksgiving dinner and several hours of waiting is the key, according to Jeff Laws, the lucky man who was first in line when doors opened at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Determined to to get a a couple presents for some special kids in his life, (the specifics of which will remain confidential, due to the fact that they are, Christmas presents) Laws was ready to get in and out of a popular Black Friday retailer as quick as possible.

1. Do you usually Black Friday shop? Why?

Why do I do this? I ask myself that sometimes. I guess it’s because it’s a deal. You know everybody wants a deal. Its the whole ... it’s kind of stupid actually. When they used to actually do it on Friday, it was different because when it was on Friday you got up early, went out in the dark and it was more fun — to me. Now they’ve taken the fun part out of it. I don’t know why it was more fun in the dark, but everything is more fun in the dark. I don’t know, it seemed like more of an adventure, a challenge when they did it Friday morning.

Is there a strategy to getting what you want?

It’s hard to explain it. Before you come you’re thinking, “Should I be there three hours early? four hours early? five hours?” Really, the strategy is to drive through the parking lot early and see what it looks like. You’ve got to scout it out a little bit. ... At like 10:30 a.m. I drove through the first time and I didn’t see anybody yet so i was like, “This is good, I’ve got time to go eat, watch the parade.”

What are you thankful for this year?

Health and family. Which just sounds so stupid when you’re out here getting materialistic stuff, but you know, this stuff is not what matters. But you get stuff to make people happy with, you know? That’s why you’re doing it.

What are you looking forward to the most about the season?

Well it’s strange because usually at work it’s a down period so we get a lot of time off this time of year, so I like that part about it.

What is your plan once the doors open?

Elbow people. clothes-line ’em, given ’em a couple — no I’m just kidding. Strategy is pretty easy because they have this ticket thing so you’ve already got what you’re looking for so you just go in there and chill and try to stay out of people’s way. Actually I try to get in and out as fast as possible like, “Supermarket Sweep.” Do you remember that show? That’s the goal.
