Blue Devils continue improved play, move above .500

BLOUNTVILLE—Unicoi County continued a hot streak with a 54-45 win at Sullivan Central Tuesday night in Three Rivers Conference basketball play.

The girls game earlier in the evening saw Sullivan Central remain undefeated against league foes with a 48-39 decision.

The boys’ contest was nip and tuck throughout, but Unicoi County pulled away in the final quarter. Robbie O’Dell scored seven of his game-best 16 points in the final eight minutes. Lucas Slagle did his part with five fourth-quarter points en route to 12.

Sullivan Central was led by Ty Barb with nine points, but all were in the first half.

Unicoi County also got nine points from Brett Lingerfelt with a set of three makes behind the arc.

With the outcome, the Blue Devils improve to 11-10 overall and 2-3 in the league race. Unicoi County has a 3-1 record in the last four outings.

Next for the Blue Devils is a home meeting with Johnson County Friday. Sullivan Central went to 7-13 overall, which includes a 2-4 league record. The Cougars step out of conference Friday to play Tennessee High.

Sullivan Central 48, Unicoi County 39 (Girls)

The game was tied at 24 apiece after three quarters. The fourth quarter was a whole effort for Sullivan Central.

The Lady Cougars doubled their point total with 24 in the final eight minutes alone. Leading the charge was Peyton Sams. She had 10 of her game-best 14 points in the fourth quarter. That helped Sullivan Central build a 43-28 lead in the fourth.

Abby Crawford tallied six points in the fourth and finished with eight points. Avery Leming hit three buckets behind the arc for nine points while Jaelyn West had seven points.

Tenley Holt helped Unicoi County stay close with seven of her eight points in the first three quarters. Ashtan Vance poured in seven of her team-best nine points in the second half.

Kayla Street had four points in both the second and fourth for eight points as seven different Lady Blue Devils scored in the contest.

With the outcome Sullivan Central, ranked No. 6 in the newest Tennessee Associated Press ranking, improved to 17-2 overall with a perfect 6-0 league mark. The Lady Cougars are almost to their 19 win total from a season ago.

Unicoi County slipped to 12-8 overall with a 2-3 league record. The Lady Blue Devils rest alone in fourth place, two games behind Elizabethton and Sullivan East with a game advantage over Happy Valley and Sullivan South.
