Six good ways for fans to spend their basketball dollars this week

It’s Definition Week for some area basketball teams.

Most of the non-conference muddle is out of the way, and teams face league tests that will help shape the rest of their seasons.

Here’s a ranking of the best games on this week’s schedule:

No. 1

Boys, Friday

Dobyns-Bennett at Science Hill

A person would have to travel all the way to Hawaii to find a team that has beaten the Hilltoppers this season. And although the Indians have been up and down this season, both teams are undefeated in the Big Seven Conference heading into Tuesday’s games. This should be a tone setter for the rest of the regular season.

No. 2

Girls, Friday

Dobyns-Bennett at Science Hill

Science Hill entered the season as a strong favorite to win the Big Seven, but D-B has positioned itself to threaten the Lady Hilltoppers. Both enter Tuesday with perfect league records.

No. 3

Girls, Friday

Daniel Boone at David Crockett

This one gets the slight nod over the boys game because of the Lady Pioneers’ impressive showing in a double-overtime loss Friday against Science Hill. Meanwhile, Boone was taking D-B to the limit.

No. 4

Boys, Friday

Daniel Boone at David Crockett

These teams have combined for five straight losses, but the competition has been stiff — Science Hill, Dobyns-Bennett and Murfreesboro Siegel. There’s a lot at stake as one of these teams could be boxed into a corner by week’s end.

No. 5

Boys, Tuesday

Elizabethton at Sullivan South

It has been an extraordinarily difficult season for the Cyclones. They were hit hard by injuries and have won just four times in 15 games. But a win here puts them in a first-place tie.

No. 6

Boys, Friday

Cloudland at Hampton

The Highlanders opened some eyes with their win over University High, just three nights after the Buccaneers crushed Hampton. It looks like a four-horse race in the Watauga Valley, but this game will provide more clarity.
