DANVILLE, Va.—Griffin Benson produced two hits, including a key two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Danville slipped past Elizabethton 6-5 in Friday night’s Appalachian League baseball play.

The Twins had scored three times in the fifth to grab a 5-3 advantage. Stepping into the batter’s box after a Ricardo Rodriguez bases-loaded walk, Benson (2 for 3) safely drove the ball to center field to bring home the tying and winning runs.

Zach Daniels (1-0), who came on to record the final Twins out in the top half of the inning, pitched the sixth before Jake Higginbotham threw the final three innings for his first save of the season.

Higginbotham allowed just one hit.

Greyson Jenista batted 3 for 4 with two runs for the Braves. Joining Jenista and Benson in the multi-hit department were Andrew Moritz (2 for 4, double) and Brett Longhorne (2 for 5, 2 runs).

Danville totaled 10 hits to Elizabethton’s nine. Ryan Jeffers topped the Twins by going 3 for 5 while Trevor Cassanova doubled and scored twice in a 2-for-4 output.

Taking the mound first for Elizabethton was Carlos Suniaga, who surrendered three runs in 2 2/3 innings. Andrew Cabezas (0-1) took over and worked till the end of the fourth, also giving up three runs.

Moises Gomez followed up with three shutout innings, amassing six of his team’s 11 strikeouts. Derek Molina threw the ninth.

The Twins will try to salvage the series finale set for tonight at 7.
